In March of this year, the 7th grade class of Heritage Christian School from Dalton, GA visited the Avian Learning Center. The trip was combined with visits to The University of Georgia Fishery Center in Cohutta and Red Clay State Park, but the children spent the largest portion of time at the Learning Center. We haven’t yet had the opportunity to document or speak of the event, and it seems to be the perfect use of this new blog. The group was split into two halves; one visited with Dr. David Aborn, Learning Center trustee and biology professor at UTC. He described to them the importance of bird banding and bird counting. Seen below are photographs of him giving instruction and showing the children a bird he had captured.

Aborn Showing Captured Bird

Aborn Speaking to Children

Dr. Aborn arrived early that morning to set up nets, and was successful in capturing a number of local birds (no harm was done to any, of course). He showed the children how biologists can identify the approximate age and sex of a bird through examination of the bird’s tail feathers. He also told them about the nationwide bird banding and counting program that he participates in through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The other half went inside the Center and were given a presentation by trustee Katie Sue Blevins. The presentation included many interesting bird extremes, and facts that the children found entertaining and fascinating. Afterwards, they participated in an art project in which they colored their own egg replicas.

This is the beginning of the C. E. Blevins Avian Learning Center News blog. New happenings and developments at the Learning Center will be posted here as they occur and as we have the opportunity. The most recent occurrence regarding the museum is the new site design. We hope you enjoy the new look, and the inclusion of the “Biography” section of the web site. Thank you for your interest in the Learning Center.
